Salt Lake City, UT – Timpanogos Regional Hospital is one of only two hospitals in Utah and among 466 hospitals nationwide to achieve a Patient Safety Excellence Award™ in an annual Healthgrades® evaluation. This distinction places the hospital among the top 10 percent in the country for patient safety. The award recognizes exceptional performance in safeguarding patients from serious, potentially preventable complications during their hospital stays.
“Our analysis reveals that patient safety is strongly associated with high quality care, so it is vitally important to choose a hospital that performs well on these key indicators,” said Evan Marks, Chief Strategy Officer, Healthgrades.
The only other Utah hospital to receive the award was Lakeview Hospital in Bountiful, Utah – a fellow MountainStar Hospital. Patient Safety Excellence Award recipients were evaluated for their excellent performance in achieving patient safety. Award winners were determined through an evaluation of the occurrence of observed incidents and expected performance for 14 Patient Safety Indicators as defined by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ).
“This award is a direct result of the dedication and focus our staff puts towards patient safety,” said Paula Strasburg, Director of Quality and Risk at Timpanogos Regional Hospital. “When patients walk through the doors of our hospital, they have the assurance that they are safe and that they are receiving the highest quality of care.”
Timpanogos Regional Hospital and its staff have achieved a Patient Safety Excellence Award three times, in 2016, 2015 and 2013. The Orem hospital also earned straight A’s in biannual Hospital Safety Scores by the Leapfrog Group from 2012 – 2015, and was recognition as a Top Performer on Key Quality Measures™ by The Joint Commission in 2015, 2014 and 2012.
“We are very proud of these patient safety awards,” said Sandy Ewell, Chief Nursing Officer at Timpanogos Regional Hospital. “Not because of the recognition it brings the hospital, but because they are a representation of the care our patients are receiving here. Treating each patient with the upmost care is always our top priority.”
Both Timpanogos Regional Hospital and Lakeview Hospital were also recognized among the nation’s 100 Top Hospitals® for the second consecutive year in 2016 by Truven Health Analytics.
2016 Patient Safety Excellence Award
In 2016, 466 hospitals across the nation achieved the Healthgrades Patient Safety Excellence Award. According to Healthgrades, the distinction places this elite group of hospitals within the top 10 percent of all hospitals nationwide.
On average, 270,457 patient safety events could have been avoided if all hospitals, as a group from 2012 to 2014, performed similarly to hospitals performing better than expected on each of 13 patient safety indicators evaluated by Healthgrades, as well as zero instances of foreign object left during procedure. In addition, Healthgrades released a new digital infographic that identifies key observations regarding patient safety and experience. Findings include:
- Four types of events make up nearly 75 percent of all patient safety events reported by hospitals. These include: accidental cut, puncture, or hemorrhage; collapsed lung; infections; and bed sores.
- Patient safety recipients are always equally or more likely than non-recipient hospitals to have superior outcomes in specialty areas. For example, Patient Safety Excellence Award Recipients are 5.1 times more likely to receive a Specialty Excellence Award for spinal surgery; 3.4 times more likely for Orthopedics overall; and 2.3 times more likely for Pulmonary Care overall.
